Share what you know about the year you were born.

1991 was a very common year. It started on a Tuesday of the Gregorian calendar. I was born some months after, in July 18, to be exact. Of course, I do not remember any of the events taken place that year. How could I anyway!?! But I have read about it here and there and I can recall what I have read. So here it goes. What do I remember of the year I was born.

  1. 1991 was the final year of the famous Cold War which began in 1947. The Soviet Union collapsed leaven 15 sovereign republics and the CIS in its place. In July of the same year, India abandned its policies of dirigism, license raj and autarky and began liberalisation to its economy. A UN authorized coalition force from 34 nations fought against Iraq, which had invaded and annexed Kuwait the previous year. That conflict was called the Gulf War and it was the beginning of the constant American military presence in the Middle East.
  2. In August, the World Wide Web, originally conceived during 1990 was released outside CERN to other research institutions.
  3. Another notable and cultural (I would call it) event is that the British Government defined the difference between a cake and a biscuit. It was a high profile court case. In the end, they published an official ruling that a cake is defined by its propensity to harden over time, whereas a biscuit softens.
  4. Bohemian Rhapsody was re-released and reached number 1 in the UK. This was Mercury’s dying wish who died on the 24th of November 1991.
  5. In Amsterdam, 20 paintings from the Van Gogh Museum were stolen but, fortunately and due to a flat tyre, they were recovered 35 minutes later.
  6. Nirvana released Nevermind in September 1991. This was their second album which contained the now infamouse track ”Smells like Teen Spirit”.

Six little facts is a good number for the time being. What do you remember of the year YOU were born?
