Define ”Holidays”

Daily writing prompt
How do you celebrate holidays?

It’s very important the ”holidays” is defined before one can answer this question… I guess it all depends on ‘which’ English you speak, right? American, British, etc…

I was taught that the word holidays is always related to those special times during the year when people celebrate something big and decorations come out of the boxes kept in the basements and attics. I am, obviously, referring to Christmas, Easter, etc… Summer was always related to the word ‘vacation’.

However, as I became better acquainted with the language I know teach to students, I realized that sometimes the word ‘holidays’ is related also to summer. Actually to any time you get to have off during the year when something is celebrated.

Now… How do I celebrate my holidays?…

Here is the thing about me. I am Greek. And we Greeks tend to stick together when we celebrate something during the year… The families get together, we cook, we eat, we eat even more and somewhere between all that eating, we sing, dance and wish each other the best! If you want more of a reference on that, then I strongly suggest you watch ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’. Even a wedding can be a holiday for us!

For some years, my family used to throw these big gatherings. They did not always include all the family members (from both sides), but really good friends. Other times, we ended up leaving Piraeus, the city where we lived, and ended up in some village in the northern parts of Greece, having occupied a whole hotel just us alone and celebrating by doing all sorts of fun things out and about in the beautiful nature and in the cold.

In Greece, Christmas time is a very important time, Easter being probably the biggest of all but I never really liked it. Too depressing, for its own reasons… Christmas, I love!!! Nowadays, I am looking forward to the time of the year (end of Novemeber) when I can put out all the lights and decorations for the house, set up the tree and make it look amazing!! I love getting in the mood for the festive season. However, I am a family person still and I prefer to sit in with my loved ones for the big days. The menu always includes hot chocolate drinks, Christmas movies (the classics!), songs, board games and the casual chit chat.

I am actually looking forward to that time of the year!
